What this adds up to, then, is this: no more lies, no more pretense. Tell your neighbor the truth. In Christ’s body we’re all connected to each other, after all. When you lie to others, you end up lying to yourself.
I’m going to be honest with you. A lie is a lie and that’s the truth. I know that this is not a popular topic, but it needs to be said. We tend to have gradients on misconduct. People tend to think that some lies are worse than others. Some cheating is worse than other cheating. Listen, we all have to set our own boundaries around our lives as far as what is right and what is wrong, but something I strongly believe is that a lie is a lie regardless of whether it’s black, white, pink or purple! While it may seem like saying a “small” lie to spare people’s feelings or to cover up a situation is totally fine and acceptable.Little lies lead to bigger and bigger lies. You all know what I’m talking about here. Not only do lies lead to lies, but here is the deal. People live with a great amount of anxiety when they practice even simple lies. In order to keep up with the stories you tell it requires literally living in two realities. That’s not healthy for anyone’s brain, and while it may seem like an easy out to fib a little, frankly it only causes more stress later.
Live life the simpler way. Everyone makes mistakes. I am certainly no exception. As an employer I don’t expect perfection of my employees. I would much rather them come to me and say, “I made this mistake” than pass it off on someone else or try to cover it up. As a friend, the same and as a mother, the same. I would rather anyone in my life tell me what I don’t want to hear than compromise our relationship by lying. What I’m trying to say is that no one will ever expect you to be perfect, but they should be able to expect honesty.
I know that telling the truth can be frightening especially when the truth is disappointing, but remember: “The truth will set you free.” John 8:32. Live your life, do your best, work hard, keep your intentions pure, and being honest won’t be that hard. If your heart is honest your lips will be also.
“They shall do no injustice and speak no lies… and none shall make them afraid.”
