Here’s the real buzz on bee pollen…

Do you have chronic fatigue, going through menopause, sick often, prostate problems, bacterial and viral infections, flu every year, history of cancer, looking for an anti-aging formula, trying to lose weight, need to improve your sex life, digestion problems, need help with your allergies, energy and stamina?  Bee pollen is something that I have taken off and on for years, but never on the consistent basis.  One of our friends at Studio V requested that I blog about bee pollen and I have found a new appreciation for this ultimate food.  Bee pollen, like most other natural remedies, is one of nature’s most incredible food products.  Like other incredible natural remedies (dandelion/Lion Tea!), it seems to aid in a magnanimous way.  I have found through the research we conducted that it assists so many things, from anti-aging to cancer prevention.  I have always been a bee pollen fan, but I definitely have a renewed interest in incorporating it in my health routine.

The Egyptians, Romans and Greeks have been using this natural remedy for centuries; if it’s good enough for them it’s good enough for me.  It’s a highly nutritious super food that has earned itself titles like “food of the gods”.  Some European physicians have been prescribing bee pollen to treat bacterial infections, viral infections, and also colds and flus (due to its antibiotic properties) over the past century.

Bee pollen is made by honey bees from the pollen of the male stamen of flowers.  Worker bees collect the pollen granules and transport it back to their nest inside ‘pollen baskets’ which are specially arranged hairs on their hind legs.  Bee pollen’s chemical composition can vary depending on a number of factors such as season, geographic location and the actual plant source.  Approximately 50% of it is comprised of carbohydrates, 35% are amino acids and proteins, 2% are fatty acids and 3% are vitamins and minerals.  Pollen contains over 5,000 different enzymes and co-enzymes which is far more than is naturally present in any other food.  Bee pollen provides energy because it contains a concentrated source of the B vitamin complex.  This is a reason why different bee pollen products are sometimes marketed as energy supplements.  Research shows that Bee pollen is also a great source of antioxidants because it contains the vitamin B complex, along with vitamin A, C, D, E, selenium, lecithin and powerful phytochemicals (carotenoids and bioflavonoids).  Bee pollen also helps to give you a feeling of fullness by acting on the hypothalamus in the brain which controls dietary drive so your appetite is naturally suppressed.  Additionally, bee pollen also helps stimulate and normalize a poor metabolism and aids in the dissolution of body fats because it contains lecithin.  Some of the coolest aspects of bee pollen are that it reduces cholesterol, helps reduce weight in obesity and strangely enough, adds weight to malnourished children.  Due to its powerful cleansing effects, if you are planning to begin your bee pollen regimen, please start slowly.  In other words, if you are planning on giving it to your child please make sure you give them 1 teaspoon per day.  For an adult, the equivalent would be 1 tablespoon a day.  You can slowly build up.

I am so excited about bee pollen that I have decided to add it to my super foods list.  It seems to be very high on the list for fantastic natural remedies.  It apparently helps everyone from the very young to the very old, the malnourished to the obese, and the average athlete to the professional athlete.  I must say, I am quite a fan, but please make sure that you look for pollen that is in granule form and not capsules.  Some research shows that when bee pollen is in capsule form, it appears that the company might have artificially refined it to remove the shell from each pollen grain and then it is encapsulated.  Apparently, these companies say that this makes the bee pollen nutrients more easily absorbed during digestion.  What they aren’t telling you is that this process also exposes the pollen nutrients to heat and light which destroys the valuable properties of raw bee pollen.  The light shell around each pollen grain is there for a reason – nature put it there to protect the nutrients.  Your digestive system is perfectly capable of breaking down the pollen shell and releasing what Mother Nature intended into your system.  So make sure you always buy raw, bee pollen granules as your source of bee pollen.  Stay away from the capsules.

If it was good enough to be used for thousands of years, I think it has definitely passed the test of time.  Why not try it today?
