Wheat Bread, Not Always So Good For You!

8 Nov

Oh, be still my aching heart!  Well Mr. Bread Maker, now you’ve really gone and done it.  Can’t a girl just buy a loaf of bread?  Mr. Bread Maker, I am putting you on notice.  My target is a poison free world and the arrows are my words!

I attempted to purchase the wheat bread that I always buy at the supermarket just a couple of days ago.  And to my surprise, or rather to my angst I found that I could not.  Well Mr. Bread Maker, if you must know one of my favorite sandwiches to make is avocado, tomato and bean sprouts on yes, you guessed it; wheat bread.  When I am in a hurry and I am starving I quickly make myself wheat toast with either a layer of organic peanut butter, almond butter or cashew butter.  Ooh and if I’m feeling really adventurous I drizzle Greek honey on my toast.  Well Mr. Bread Maker, now you’ve gone and done it!  My “go to” loaf is no longer my “go to” loaf!  In fact, I had to leave the supermarket I was in and make an extra trip to Trader Joe’s to hunt down a loaf of wheat bread without nasty chemicals in it.

Well Mr. Bread Maker I’m sure you will be relieved to find out that my extra trip was not for naught.  Well everyone, we live in a world where we have to even study the ingredients  of our favorite wheat bread.  Yes indeed, I have come to realize that many companies are putting nasty ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup, caramel coloring, calcium proprionate and other fillers and preservatives.

Please, oh please, before reaching for the whole wheat loaf at the supermarket turn it over and read the ingredients.  For you might be making an extra trip like I did.  There are many shops to purchase good quality whole wheat bread without nasty chemicals.  Trader Joe’s happens to be one of my favorites since their prices are so great.  I must admit, this weekend made me long for the days of when I was a small child in Greece and whole wheat bread was easily accessible everywhere without chemicals…aah to live in a poison free world, one can hope, can’t one?!
