Alzheimer’s

20 Jun

Several weeks ago after one of our presentations, a lovely gal came over to me and asked me if I knew of what things might help Alzheimer’s patients.  Unfortunately, but hopefully this will change soon, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).  It is my opinion however, that there are certain things a person with AD can eat that may help to slow the progression of the disease.

First and foremost I feel it is important to mention that there has been so much research done and there are many foods that have been linked to AD.  Since we are on the topic, I should say it is my personal opinion that we should all play it safe and especially refrain from many products containing artificial sweeteners.  Results of studies have sure scared me enough.  None of us are going to live a perfect life.  I know that somehow we all, one way or another, will consume things that we should not.  But for goodness sake, should you see aspartame on the back of an item, put it right back on the shelf.

Back now to the question about a person who is caring for a loved one with AD.  You should know that they have a childlike mentality so try to keep their day filled with activities that they used to like to do before being plagued with this disease.  Just bear in mind not to over task, keep activities to a minimum.

As many of you know, I believe that diet can play a significant role in everyone’s life.  I am not certain how much this will help but allow me to answer your question regarding what a patient with AD should eat.  An AD patient should be eating a low fat, low cholesterol diet consisting of lean protien, plenty of fruits and vegetables and lots of whole grains.  The following are great items to include in their diet:

  • Lots of turmeric
  • Raw honey
  • Raw walnuts
  • Wild Alaskan salmon
  • Quinoa, barley and oatmal
  • Shiitake mushrooms

Will changing their diet and adding the above items?  I don’t know but it sure can’t hurt.  Most importantly, at the very least, remember to ensure the AD patient is eating a clean diet; no additives, preservatives or chemicals.  Hey, I figure a clean diet may help to slow the progression.  It is certainly at least worth a try.
