What makes yeast happy ain’t exactly making us happy. Have you heard of ammonium sulfate? You know – that stuff hanging around active volcanoes? Ammonium sulfate is “an inorganic salt with a number of commercial uses. The most common use is as a soil fertilizer. It contains 21% nitrogen as ammonium cations, and 24% sulfur as sulfate anions. In fertilizer the purpose of the sulfate is to reduce the soil pH.”
What else is it used for? Funny you should ask. Have you been to Subway lately? You know – when you’re standing in line trying to figure out if you should order white rolls or the “healthy” choice – a wheat roll – yes, maybe you’ve guessed by now. The wheat rolls at Subway contain ammonium sulfate. I know!! This one shocked me too! Oh, and by the way, that name brand bread called “Nature’s Own” also contains it.
What are some of the other uses of ammonium sulfate besides your favorite Subway rolls? How about insecticides, flame retardants, and vaccines. And yes, this is on the list of the most dangerous additives and chemicals.
Well, I must say, I am not usually shocked, but I will tell you that I will be extremely cautious when eating wheat bread in the future.
And all along, I thought the only problem with Subway was the cured meats. Are we really living in a society where we will sacrifice our health and our children’s health for faster, cheaper, easier methods of manufacturing food.
Now, I know I don’t want to make my own wheat bread, but, for goodness sake! What the heck are we supposed to do? I suppose I should put a loaf of wheat bread in my bag of goodies to carry around with me.
